Find Top Fence Companies in Salt Lake City, UT

Salt Lake City anchors Utah’s Wasatch Front metro, a narrow urban corridor wedged between the Wasatch Mountains to the east and the Great Salt Lake to the west, where the fence market serves one of the fastest-growing population corridors in the American West. The SLC metro’s fence contractors work across a range of communities from the city’s established neighborhoods near the University of Utah and Sugar House to the rapidly growing suburbs of Murray, West Valley, West Jordan, and the Davis County communities of Layton, Kaysville, and Clearfield to the north. The Wasatch Front’s alkaline desert soils and caliche layers require attention to post anchoring depth, and the valley’s extreme temperature swings — from well below zero in January to over 100°F in July — put real stress on lower-grade materials over time.

Salt Lake City Zoning & Permit Guide

Salt Lake City: The Salt Lake City Building Services Division requires a permit for most permanent fence installations. Standard residential zoning allows rear and side yard fences up to 6 feet and front yard fences up to 4 feet. SLC’s historic districts including Avenues and Capitol Hill may have additional design review requirements.

Salt Lake County Suburbs (Murray, West Valley, West Jordan, South Salt Lake): Each suburb operates its own building department. Murray, West Valley City, and West Jordan all require permits for permanent residential fences. Many newer West Jordan and Herriman subdivisions have active HOA covenants. See our FAQ on fence permit requirements.

Davis County (Layton, Kaysville, Clearfield): Davis County’s communities each have independent building departments. Layton and Kaysville are growing rapidly with active HOA communities in newer subdivisions.

Caliche and Alkaline Soils: Much of the Wasatch Front has caliche hardpan and alkaline soils that require adapted drilling technique. Confirm your contractor’s equipment can reach adequate post depth in Utah’s desert substrate.

Pool Safety: Utah pool barrier requirements mandate a minimum 48-inch (4-foot) enclosure with self-closing, self-latching gates. Learn more about making your fence pool code compliant.

Utilities: Utah law requires calling Blue Stakes of Utah (811) at least two working days before any digging begins.
