Louisville is Kentucky’s largest city and the commercial engine of a metro that stretches across Jefferson County and spills into the surrounding counties of Oldham, Shelby, Spencer, and Bullitt. Fence contractors here work across an unusually wide range of property types — from the historic Victorian streetscapes of Cherokee Triangle and the Highlands, where the Louisville Metro Historic Preservation office may weigh in on fence materials and design, to the newer master-planned communities in Simpsonville and La Grange where HOA covenants govern everything from fence height to the direction the finished side must face. What Louisville homeowners deal with that the state page doesn’t cover is the Louisville Metro Government’s unified permit system, which handles permitting for all of Jefferson County under a single process.

Louisville Metro Zoning & Permit Guide
Permit Requirements: All permanent fence installations in Louisville Metro require a zoning permit through Louisville Metro Development Services. The application requires a site plan showing property lines and proposed fence location. Permits are typically reviewed within 5 to 10 business days for standard residential projects.
Height Standards: In standard residential zones, rear and side yard fences are permitted up to 6 feet. Front yard fences are capped at 4 feet and must be of a design that does not obstruct sightlines at intersections or driveways. Fences in corner lot clear-sight triangles are further restricted.
Historic Districts: Properties in Louisville’s designated historic preservation districts including Cherokee Triangle, Old Louisville, and Butchertown require review by the Louisville Metro Historic Preservation Office. Material, height, and style restrictions apply and approval must be obtained before any installation begins.
Surrounding County Communities: If your property is in Simpsonville, Shelbyville, La Grange, or Taylorsville, contact that city or county’s building department directly as they operate independent of Louisville Metro. See our FAQ on fence permit requirements.
Pool Safety: Kentucky pool barrier requirements mandate a minimum 48-inch (4-foot) enclosure with self-closing, self-latching gates. Learn more about making your fence pool code compliant.
Utilities: Kentucky law requires calling Kentucky 811 at least two working days before any digging begins.
