San Antonio is Texas’s second-largest city and one of the most distinctive fence markets in the state, anchored by its position at the edge of the Texas Hill Country where the caliche and limestone of the Edwards Plateau meets the flat coastal plains to the south and east. Unlike Houston’s gumbo clay or Dallas’s Blackland Prairie, San Antonio’s geology is dominated by caliche hardpan and thin limestone soils in much of the city and its northern suburbs — the same rock-drilling challenge that defines Hill Country installations, and a situation where a contractor without caliche-capable equipment simply cannot set posts to adequate depth. The city’s massive military presence at Fort Sam Houston, Joint Base San Antonio, and Lackland also creates a unique market for commercial and security fencing that shapes what many contractors focus on alongside residential work.

San Antonio Zoning & Permit Guide
City of San Antonio: The San Antonio Development Services Department requires a permit for most permanent fence installations. Standard residential zoning allows rear and side yard fences up to 6 feet and front yard fences up to 4 feet. San Antonio’s historic districts including King William and Lavaca require review from the Office of Historic Preservation.
Bexar County Suburbs (Schertz, Converse, Live Oak): Each suburb operates its own building department independent of San Antonio. The northeastern Bexar County communities near the military installations have steady residential growth with active permit offices. See our FAQ on fence permit requirements.
Caliche and Limestone Soils: San Antonio’s caliche hardpan requires specialized drilling equipment — a standard gas auger will not reach adequate depth in most of the city’s northern and western soils. Ask your contractor specifically what equipment they use for caliche and confirm they have genuine experience with San Antonio’s geology.
Pool Safety: Texas pool barrier requirements mandate a minimum 48-inch (4-foot) enclosure with self-closing, self-latching gates. Learn more about making your fence pool code compliant.
Utilities: Texas law requires calling Texas 811 at least two working days before any digging begins.
