Medford anchors the Rogue Valley in southern Oregon, a market that is geographically and climatically distinct from the wet Willamette Valley — the Rogue Valley sits in a rain shadow that gives it hotter, drier summers and more dramatic temperature swings than Portland or Salem, making material performance and UV durability real considerations rather than afterthoughts. Central Point and Medford are the commercial hubs of Jackson County, while Klamath Falls to the east in Klamath County is a separate high desert market with its own set of challenges — basalt rock soils, a frost line pushed deeper by its 4,100-foot elevation, and the dry, wind-swept environment of the Klamath Basin that accelerates material degradation in wood fences without adequate maintenance.

Medford Zoning & Permit Guide
City of Medford: The Medford Building Division requires a permit for most permanent fence installations within city limits. Standard residential zoning allows rear and side yard fences up to 6 feet and front yard fences up to 4 feet. Medford’s newer south-side developments have active HOA communities.
Jackson County (Central Point): Central Point operates its own building department independent of Medford. Contact the City of Central Point Building Department for current permit requirements. Jackson County’s rural properties outside city limits fall under county zoning jurisdiction. See our FAQ on fence permit requirements.
Klamath County (Klamath Falls): Klamath Falls is the county seat of Klamath County and operates its own Building Department. At 4,100 feet elevation, Klamath Falls has a deeper frost line and more dramatic temperature swings than the Rogue Valley — ask your contractor about appropriate post depth and material selection for this high desert climate.
Pool Safety: Oregon pool barrier requirements mandate a minimum 48-inch (4-foot) enclosure with self-closing, self-latching gates. Learn more about making your fence pool code compliant.
Utilities: Oregon law requires calling Oregon 811 at least two working days before any digging begins.
