South Jersey’s fence market is anchored by the Camden County suburbs of Cherry Hill, Turnersville, and Washington Township, where the legacy of mid-century suburban development meets the ongoing growth of communities that have long defined themselves by their distance from both Philadelphia and the Jersey Shore. Contractors here work in a market that is distinctly different from North Jersey — the pace is less frantic, the permit processes tend to be more predictable, and the soil conditions across Burlington and Gloucester Counties are more uniform than the rocky terrain of the northern part of the state. Crosswicks in Burlington County adds a rural character to this market, where properties on the edge of the Pinelands region have their own specific environmental and setback considerations.

South Jersey Zoning & Permit Guide
Camden County (Turnersville / Washington Township): Washington Township, which includes Turnersville, requires a permit for most permanent fence installations through its Building Department. Camden County’s communities generally follow standard residential zoning with rear/side limits of 6 feet and front yard limits of 4 feet.
Burlington County (Crosswicks / Bordentown area): Crosswicks falls within Chesterfield Township in Burlington County. Burlington County’s rural townships operate through their own zoning boards. Properties near the Pinelands Protection Area may be subject to Pinelands Commission environmental regulations that restrict certain types of development near sensitive habitats. See our FAQ on fence permit requirements.
Pinelands Overlay: Properties within or adjacent to the New Jersey Pinelands should confirm whether they fall within the Pinelands management area before installing any fence, as land disturbance near certified Pinelands parcels can require additional review.
Pool Safety: New Jersey pool barrier requirements mandate a minimum 48-inch (4-foot) enclosure with self-closing, self-latching gates. Learn more about making your fence pool code compliant.
Utilities: New Jersey law requires calling NJ One Call (811) at least three working days before any digging begins.
