St Louis fence contractors work across one of the Midwest’s most jurisdictionally complex metro areas, where the City of St Louis operates as an independent municipality entirely separate from St Louis County, and the surrounding communities of St Charles County, Jefferson County, and dozens of incorporated municipalities each run their own permit processes. Chesterfield, O’Fallon, Festus, and Farmington all bring their own codes and requirements, and a contractor working across this metro in a single week is navigating an unusually high number of separate jurisdictions. The Missouri side of the metro also crosses into Illinois through the Metro East, though the listings here focus on the Missouri portion of the market.

St Louis Zoning & Permit Guide
City of St Louis (Independent City): The St Louis Building Division requires a permit for all permanent fence installations. The City of St Louis is an independent municipality — it is not part of St Louis County and operates a completely separate permit and zoning system. Standard residential limits are 6 feet rear/side and 4 feet front.
St Louis County: St Louis County has its own Department of Public Works that governs unincorporated county areas. However, many communities within the county — including Chesterfield — are separately incorporated with their own building departments.
St Charles County (O’Fallon, St Charles): St Charles County has seen explosive growth and each of its incorporated cities runs independent permit offices. O’Fallon and St Charles city both require permits for permanent residential fences. See our FAQ on fence permit requirements.
Jefferson County (Festus, Farmington): Jefferson County’s communities are governed by their own city building departments. Festus and Farmington both have established permit processes for residential fence installations.
Pool Safety: Missouri pool barrier requirements mandate a minimum 48-inch (4-foot) enclosure with self-closing, self-latching gates. Learn more about making your fence pool code compliant.
Utilities: Missouri law requires calling Missouri One Call (811) at least two working days before any digging begins.
