Springfield is the Queen City of the Ozarks and the commercial hub for a wide swath of southwest Missouri that stretches from the Ozark Plateau down toward the Arkansas border. Fence contractors here work in a market shaped by the Ozarks’ distinctive rocky terrain — chert, limestone, and dolomite bedrock are close to the surface in many parts of Greene County and the surrounding region, and drilling post holes often requires equipment that a contractor unfamiliar with Ozark geology won’t have on the truck. The market also includes the rural agricultural properties, hobby farms, and Ozark recreational land of communities like Brighton and West Plains, where fence work is often as much about livestock and wildlife management as residential privacy.

Springfield Zoning & Permit Guide
City of Springfield: The Springfield Building Development Services Division requires a permit for most permanent fence installations within city limits. Standard residential zoning allows rear and side yard fences up to 6 feet and front yard fences up to 4 feet. Springfield’s growing southwest and east corridors have active HOA communities with additional covenant requirements.
Greene County Rural Properties: Properties outside Springfield city limits in unincorporated Greene County are governed by county zoning rules. Contact the Greene County Planning and Development Department for applicable requirements. See our FAQ on fence permit requirements.
Howell County (West Plains): West Plains is the county seat of Howell County and operates its own building department well outside Springfield’s jurisdiction. It’s the commercial hub for a large rural area in the Missouri Ozarks where fence work often involves agricultural and rural residential projects governed by county rather than city codes.
Ozark Rocky Terrain: Chert and limestone bedrock close to the surface is common across the Springfield Plateau. Ask your contractor how they handle rock encounters during post installation — core drilling and direct rock anchoring are the right solution in this region, not deeper digging with a standard auger.
Pool Safety: Missouri pool barrier requirements mandate a minimum 48-inch (4-foot) enclosure with self-closing, self-latching gates. Learn more about making your fence pool code compliant.
Utilities: Missouri law requires calling Missouri One Call (811) at least two working days before any digging begins.
